I love finding creative ways to use leftovers. I had left over French pastry cream from the French fruit tart and I also had puff pastry & chocolate left over from the chocolate cigars I made recently. So I decided to put them to good use and the outcome turned out better than I expected. Instead of constantly searching for new recipes and shopping for new ingredients take a look around your kitchen and see what you can create. You may just surprise yourself!
1 sheet puff pastry dough, thawed
1 cup French pastry cream
½ cup semi-sweet chocolate morsels
Pre-heat oven to 400° F. Unfold the pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. Cut the pastry sheet along the folds. Then cut into 12 (3 x 2 1/2-inch) rectangles. Place the cut pieces onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 10 minutes until golden brown. Place on wire rack to cool.
Once cooled separate each pastry in half. Apply layer of pastry cream to each. Add a layer of sliced strawberries then replace top and drizzle with chocolate sauce.
Cook and stir the remaining chocolate chips and 2 tablespoons butter in a heavy 1-quart saucepan over low heat until the mixture is melted and smooth. Stir in the confectioners’ sugar (as needed to thicken). Stir in hot water, adding additional water, if necessary, until desired consistency. Drizzle the icing over pastries.
